GeoTrust’s Digital
Signing Technology Chosen by
Unified Testing Initiative Members to Protect Mobile
Java Applications
GeoTrust to Enable Trusted Distribution of
Certified Mobile Java Applications
WELLESLEY, Mass.—July 26, 2004—GeoTrust,
Inc., a leader in identity and security solutions
for e-business and the world’s second largest
certificate authority, today announced that it has
been selected by the members of the Unified Testing
Initiative (UTI) to provide digital signing services
for ensuring trusted distribution of mobile Java applications
under the Java Verified™ program. Digitally
signing mobile applications will ensure the integrity
of the application code and greatly reduce the risks
of tampering once an application has been signed after
testing.
Today, the demand to download Java-based applications
that enable mobile phone users to instant message
one another, view video news clips or play numerous
games has never been higher. GeoTrust helps ensure
the trusted distribution of these Java-based applications
so mobile phone users know that applications are safe
to run on their devices.
“The Unified Testing Initiative members are
pleased to be working with GeoTrust on securing the
growth of the mobile application market,” said
Juan Dewar, senior director, Consumer and Mobile Systems
Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc. “The continued,
rapid, widespread adoption of mobile Java-based applications
and the growth of the mobile industry on a global
scale are dependent upon ensuring the integrity and
security of the many applications on the market today
and newer applications in the development phase.”
Wireless developers who wish to test their applications
simply register at www.javaverified.com. Application
testing is administered by selected test houses worldwide
for application launch, user interface, functionality,
security, network and localization capabilities.
Once Java applications have completed testing, a
GeoTrust cryptographic digital signature is created
for the application and appended to the distributed
code. These digital signatures can be verified by
anyone at any time, guaranteeing the integrity of
the application code and that there have been no intentional
or unintentional alterations of the application code.
Trusted distribution of Java technology-based mobile
applications will allow developers to more efficiently
market their applications. Upon certification, mobile
network operators receive tested and signed applications,
removing the need to do further testing, ensuring
that handset providers can trust and reach a larger
base of Java developers.
“Mobile devices today are used more and more
like desktop computers and as the applications available
to download become more sophisticated, ensuring the
integrity of these applications and the carrier networks
is paramount,” said Neal Creighton, president
and CEO of GeoTrust. “GeoTrust is pleased to
be working with Sun and the other UTI members on creating
a trusted environment for downloading the next generation
applications that will drive future growth of the
mobile device market.”
About the Unified Testing Initiative (UTI)
The Unified Testing initiative (UTI) was established
in June 2003 by members Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson,
Siemens and Sun Microsystems to help accelerate the
availability of applications and services for Java™
technology-enabled wireless devices. The initiative
has set common certification criteria for content
testing that the members aim to make a symbol of consistent
quality in the wireless industry. UTI testing for
developers’ applications is currently managed
through the supporting Java Verified program.
About the Java Verified ProgramSM
Launched in February, 2004, the Java Verified Program
supports the goals set forth by the Unified Testing
Initiative (UTI) and provides developers with the
most effective way to test, promote and distribute
mobile content to global end-users and subscribers.
Developers whose applications successfully pass Java
Verified testing can choose to participate in marketing
and distribution programs offered by Motorola, Nokia,
Orange, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems and
T-Mobile-Europe. For more information, please visit
