Microsoft Outlook Express 5.X Instructions
Introduction
You can use a GeoTrust My Credential certificate to
send and receive secure e-mail messages over the Internet
with Outlook Express. Outlook Express supports the
Secure Multi-Purpose Internet Messaging Extensions
(S/MIME) protocol; the GeoTrust My Credential certificate
conforms to this standard allowing you to use this
for encrypted e-mail.
Obtain a GeoTrust My Credential
certificate for use with Outlook Express
In order to send and receive secure messages in Outlook
Express you must have a digital certificate. To obtain
a certificate, please use the information below.
Get a GeoTrust My Credential
certificate:
Obtain your certificate here: http://www.geotrust.com/smime/
Enrollment Process:
1. Complete enrollment and verification
process.
2. Go to your custom certificate
pick-up page to obtain your new certificate.
3. Click on 'INSTALL' button.
Note: In order to complete the certificate
installation process, you must complete both the enrollment
process and certificate pickup process using the same
browser.
Configuring Outlook Express
to use your certificate (Figure 1)
After your certificate has been installed the following
tasks must be completed to enable Outlook Express
for secure e-mail.
1. Go to 'Tools' > 'Accounts'
2. Click on the 'Mail' tab, select
your current settings then click on 'Properties'
3. Click on the 'Security' tab (Figure
1)

4. Locate the box labeled 'Certificate'
under 'Signing Certificate', if empty, click on 'Select'
to choose your GeoTrust certificate.
5. Repeat the same procedure under
the section 'Encryption Preferences'.
6. 'Algorithm' should be set to
3DES.
7. Select 'OK' when done.
Sending signed and encrypted
messages
1. Create a new message
2. Select 'Tools' > 'Digitally Sign
or Encrypt' (Figure 2)
These options may also be made available
in your toolbar for easy access.

Signing and/or Encrypting
messages automatically
1. Select 'Tools' > 'Options' >
'Security'
2. Locate the 'Secure Email' section
3. To automatically digitally sign
each message place a check mark in the box labeled:
'Digitally sign all outgoing messages'
4. To automatically encrypt each
message place a check mark in the box labeled: 'Encrypt
contents and attachments to all out going messages'
Placing a check mark in both boxes
will automatically digitally sign and encrypt each
message.
